The popularity of carpet tiles has risen over the past few years, thanks in part to the high demand in the hospitality industry (hotels, resorts, vacation rental units). Recently, DIYs (Do It Yourselfers) have grasped hold of the carpet tile movement, as the news on how inexpensive and easy it is to install became ‘viral.’ Individuals and smaller businesses are using the tile in basements, play rooms, garages, and pet areas.
The popularity of carpet tile as a flooring solution has risen from the high demand for the performance in extremely high traffic areas such as airports, child care centers, hospitals and passenger trains, to name a few. Businesses and individuals are using the tile in skating rinks, bowling alleys, child care centers, garages, basements and many other areas that are looking for almost bullet proof performance.
Carpet tile requires no pad and can be laid directly on cement flooring. Without the pad, the risk of mold and mildew decreases greatly in an area like a basement that can often hold moisture. Just as in other areas of the home, installing the tile is a matter of cleaning the floor finding the center of the room, laying the tiles starting in the middle, then simply using spot glue or perimeter taping. The carpet squares come with instruction on the best way to secure them down by using a spray, glue, or double sided tape.
The attraction of using carpet tile in children’s playrooms or ‘pet rooms’ is fairly obvious. Children and pets often stain or mark on carpet. Rather than attempting to remove the stain, the DIY may simply replace the tile. The commercial grade tiles are made for indoor or outdoor use. Just remember to buy ‘extras’ when ordering tile for a room. The recommended number of extras is 2-5% of the number of tiles the DIY actually used.
Carpet tile is sold by the square foot or square yard. The tiles are relatively inexpensive and are often discounted. Carpet tiles start at 29 cents a square foot. DIYs could cover a 200 square foot room for $58 in carpet tile.
